By the time it looks bad to you, the fish are already living in dangerous conditions for quite some time. Carry out regular partial water changes for keeping the water clean at all times. You should also test regularly for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrate for ensuring that water does not just look clean but that it is safe for the fish also.
